Enjoy on-the-rocks

In the bottle: A clean and classic sweet potato shōchū nose greets you right away—light, fresh, and free of heavy sweetness, exactly what you want from a summer expression. The aroma opens with well-balanced, subtle sweetness carrying hints of vanilla and fruit; with eyes closed, it’s easy to picture watermelon, which perfectly enhances the summery appeal. This is precisely the kind of inviting profile you hope to find when cracking open a bottle on a hot, humid summer night.

On the rocks: From the first sip, Natsu no Komaki hits an ideal balance of fresh sweet potato and gentle sweetness, making it dangerously easy to drink all evening. That same easy-drinking nature has a downside: once the ice fully melts, the flavors retreat noticeably—you can still detect them, but the intensity drops off significantly. I found much better results using stone cubes, which preserve the richness of the sweet potato longer and allow subtle earthier notes to emerge. The finish carries pleasant vanilla and fruit echoes from the nose, though nothing lingers especially long—which, in fairness, encourages the next sip.

Straight: Almost excessively smooth. While the sweet potato character gains more impact and clarity compared to diluted service, the overall profile lacks enough depth or complexity to make neat drinking truly compelling. This aligns with expectations—most people will prefer this shōchū chilled and over ice. That said, the finish performs noticeably better here: the sweetness lingers longer and ebbs and flows in a satisfying way, providing a clean and pleasant close.

Reflections on this shōchū

  • Last summer, I sampled several seasonal summer shōchū expressions and found them generally enjoyable. This year, work kept me busy, and the season slipped by almost unnoticed before I could explore more.

  • I know very little about the distillery behind Natsu no Komaki, but it’s now clear I need to dig deeper into their lineup and discover what else they produce. First, though, I’ll need to make some space on the shelf for additional bottles.
