Name: 六代目百合 Rokudaimeyuri

Type: 芋焼酎 Sweet Potato Shochu
Potato:
さつま芋 Satsuma Sweet Potato
Ingredients:

  • さつま芋(鹿児島産) Sweet Potato (Kagoshima)

  • 米麹(タイ産)Rice Koji (Thailand)

Alcohol: 25%

In the bottle: Straight-up sweet potato awesomeness dominates the nose: a perfect balance of sharp freshness and subtle sweetness that ties everything together seamlessly. With a bit of swirling and oxygen exposure, earthy notes emerge alongside wet hay and stone—subtle but grounding. The aromas translate remarkably well to the palate, creating a cohesive, solid impression. Overall, this is a clean, focused expression that highlights the raw quality of the sweet potato without excess.

On the rocks: Very interesting contrast: neat felt light and “wet,” but on the rocks (with melting ice adding a touch of water), it becomes noticeably thicker and sweeter. Both styles are great, though the surprise shift adds intrigue. Sweet potato freshness backs the increased sweetness beautifully, pulling you back for sip after sip. The finish holds strong with toasted rice and wheat/oats (evoking Oh’s cereal for those familiar), weaving in and out before leaving subtle cocoa on the back end. Highly recommended—this bottle made me wish I’d bought the larger size.

Straight: Wow, simply wow. An immediate burst of vanilla, burnt caramel, cocoa, and a hint of flowers hits the tongue. The palate feels remarkably soft and smooth—almost no viscosity, with a distinctive “wet” quality that’s hard to describe otherwise. The finish is beautiful: wave after wave of toasted wheat/rice, dry vanilla, caramel, and cocoa linger gracefully. Rokudaime Yuri performs exceptionally neat, showcasing its refinement and depth without needing dilution to shine.

Enjoy on the rocks or straight

Reflections on this Awamori

  • I picked up a smaller bottle of Rokudaime Yuri a while back and enjoyed it so much that I went back for a second one. It offers excellent value for the price—high-quality, distinctive imo character without premium pricing—and it’s perfect for enjoying a couple of relaxed glasses on a hot summer night. The fresh, sharp sweet potato core, balanced sweetness, toasted grain notes, and smooth drinkability make it an easy, refreshing choice for warm evenings.

  • Recently spotted a couple more bottles of Rokudaime Yuri in genshu versions with different alcohol strengths. These higher-ABV expressions (likely 38–42% range, based on similar limited releases from the distillery) intrigue me for their potential added intensity and depth while retaining the signature freshness and toasted richness. Considering picking them up in the future to compare side-by-side with the standard bottling—curious to see how the increased alcohol influences the mouthfeel, finish, and overall balance.

  • Rokudaime Yuri continues to impress as one of the more compelling and authentic sweet potato shōchū from Koshiki Island: pure, layered, and versatile across neat and on-the-rocks. The genshu variants look promising for those who enjoy bolder, more structured imo expressions. If you’re exploring Shiota Shuzō’s lineup or seeking a standout everyday-to-special-occasion bottle, this series is well worth keeping on your radar. Solid value and high drinkability make it a reliable reorder candidate.
