In the bottle: Gorojima Kintoki presents as remarkably neutral on the nose at first. With focused attention, a very fresh fragrance emerges—reminiscent of just-cut sweet potatoes—but beyond that, there is little else to detect initially. After opening the bottle and allowing some air exposure, the sweet potato character becomes noticeably stronger and more expressive. A bit of oxygen appears to help this shōchū open up considerably.
On the rocks: Despite the subdued nose, this shōchū reveals far more depth and appeal when served over ice. Sweet potato immediately takes center stage, delivered with a smooth and well-balanced interplay of sweetness and earthiness, lifted by a clean, appropriate sharpness that ties everything together. Subtle vanilla and black pepper notes appear quietly in the finish, encouraging slow, contemplative sipping. As the ice melts, the profile opens further—sweet potato becomes even more prominent, with brighter, greener, and less earthy tones adding welcome depth and vibrancy. Overall, this has been a rewarding pickup.
Straight: Exceptionally smooth and easy to drink. The front palate brings a pleasant vanilla note that quickly gives way to a rich, luscious sweet potato flavor that spreads generously across the tongue. The finish introduces a distinct peppery spike before easing into soft, lingering sweetness that fades gracefully. This is a beautifully crafted shōchū that rewards neat sipping with refined balance and lasting appeal.

Picked this up in Ishikawa while on business, I was in a rush to catch the train and at first, I thought the distillery was in the area, but after looking closer at the label the distillery is in Kagoshima and the potatoes come from Fukui, still no complaints.

This bottle was a bit on the pricey side at 3000 JPY, but overall; I felt that the price was acceptable as it was packaged quite nicely and the quality of the shochu was certainly good.

In the bottle: The nose is beautifully inviting and far more expressive than expected—especially from a 900ml bottle, which in my experience can be hit-or-miss. Fresh sweet potato pours through clearly and prominently, perfectly suited to a hot Hiroshima summer night. Beyond the upfront sweet potato, mature candied vanilla and subtle cereal notes emerge to create a well-integrated profile. Overall, it builds strong anticipation for the palate, and it delivers without disappointment.
On the rocks: JSimply delicious from the first sip. Strong, impactful sweet potato combines with candied and mature vanilla plus hints of cereal grain, all supported by a refreshing, lively mouthfeel that makes this an easy shōchū for multiple glasses without fatigue. Opening the bottle in summer rather than winter was an excellent decision. As the ice melts, the sweeter elements rise to the forefront, and the finish settles into a gentle ebb and flow between vanilla and sweet potato—perfect for slow, relaxed sipping and easy refills.
Straight: Soft and sweet at the start, with just a light tingle of alcohol that is noticeable but not intrusive. On subsequent sips, the sharpness fades, allowing the vanilla more room to express itself, particularly on the finish. The sweet potato shines here in a delicate, pure form that feels refined and clean. While neat works well enough, on a hot July night in Hiroshima, it is not necessarily the ideal serving style—though it is still enjoyable and far from disappointing.
Paired with Chocolate: The pairing starts soft and sweet with a mild alcohol presence that remains in check. On further sips, the profile becomes less assertive overall. This is a decent combination—nothing wrong with it—but it does not stand out as one of the stronger pairings for this shōchū.

After finishing the first bottle from Kami Shuzo, I explored their online store to see what else they offer. Among the lineup, a few stood out—including this one and the must-buy Godzilla and King Ghidorah-themed bottles.

This is a highly enjoyable shōchū with solid appeal across the board. The detail about the koji returning to Earth on the final space shuttle mission is more of an intriguing piece of trivia than something that noticeably impacts the flavor, but it certainly adds a unique and cool factor to the bottle. Well worth exploring if you’re already a fan of the distillery’s style.
