Enjoy Straight or on-the-rocks

In the bottle: Gorojima Kintoki is incredibly neutral, if you nose it hard enough you can catch a really fresh fragrance like just cut sweet potatoes. However, other than that, if does not feel like there is much really going on here. After opening the bottle and leaving it for a bit, after opening the cap, you get a much stronger potato nose, seems this just needed a bit of oxygen to open up.

On the rocks: Really delicious, I had my concerns with the very soft nose, but on-the-rocks you can get an immediate sense that there is a lot more going on here. The sweet potatoes take center stage here with a smooth balance between sweet and earthy, accompanied by a nice sharpness which ties this all together. Also, you can find subtle vanilla and black pepper notes hiding in the finish which makes Gorojima Kintoki something to enjoy slowly. As the ice melts this opens up even more, especially on the sweet potato side. There is a really nice depth here as you get a bigger, brighter range of flavors that are a bit greener and less earthy, overall this has been a good pick up.

Straight: So smooth and easy to drink, on the the front end you get a very nice vanilla that spreads into a luscious sweet potato that just washes over everything so nicely. Once you get to the finish you are treated with a nice peppery finish that spikes up before fading into some beautifully soft sweet notes that linger nicely as you enjoy this well crafted shochu.

Reflections on this shōchū

  • Picked this up in Ishikawa while on business, I was in a rush to catch the train and at first, I thought the distillery was in the area, but after looking closer at the label the distillery is in Kagoshima and the potatoes come from Fukui, still no complaints.

  • This bottle was a bit on the pricey side at 3000 JPY, but overall; I felt that the price was acceptable as it was packaged quite nicely and the quality of the shochu was certainly good.

In the bottle: Beautifully inviting, and much more than I was expecting, especially in terms of the sweet potato which comes pouring through loud and clear (this aversion might be due to my bad luck with 900ml bottles of shochu which tend to be more miss than hit). What I really like about Mr. Toshi Densetsu is how fresh this comes across and how well this matches a hot Hiroshima night. Aside from all that sweet potato up front, you can find some nice mature and candied vanilla as well as some cereal notes that tie this all together. Overall, this builds a high anticipation for what is in the glass (which, absolutely does not disappoint).

On the rocks: Just delicious, simply delicious, on the first sip you get strong impact notes of sweet potato, candied & mature vanilla and bits of cereal grains all backed by a refreshing mouthfeel that really makes this a bottle to enjoy a couple glasses of without getting bored; opening this bottle in summer instead of winter was a good choice. As the ice melts Mr. Toshi Densetsu mellows out quite a bit and the sweeter notes really rise to the surface, and the finish moves to more of an ebb and flow between vanilla and sweet potato, which makes this something to sip and enjoy (then go back and refill the glass).

Straight: Soft and sweet at the start with a ting of alcohol (nothing too off-putting, just lets you know it is there), the second sip is less sharp which gives the vanilla a bit of breathing room, especially on the finish. What I really enjoyed about Mr. Toshi Densetsu neat in the glass was the sweet potato which comes across as delicate and pure. On a hot July night in Hiroshima, I cannot say this is the best way to enjoy this; but it certainly is not bad either.

Paired with Chocolate: Soft and sweet at the start with a ting of alcohol (nothing too off-putting, just lets you know it is there), the second sip is less in your face, overall this is not a bad pairing, just not the best.
