Name: ? ないな紫 ?Naina Murasaki
Type: 芋・米ブレンド焼酎 Potato/Rice shōchū blend
Potato: ムラサキマサリ Purple Sweet Potato
Ingredients:
-
甘藷・米・Sweet Potato, Rice
-
Rice Koji 米麹 (国産米)
Alcohol: 25%
In the bottle: A brilliant and bright sweet potato shōchū nose with a subtle fragrance of rice with some beautiful floral notes at the end. This is one of those bottles you can open up and just enjoy before ever taking a sip. Overall, Naina is fresh and clean with nothing clouding what is in the bottle.
On the rocks: Right from the first sip, you are greeted with an amazing medley of sweet potato and rice that is pure magic as it spreads across the palate. As the ice melts a little, vanilla, caramel, and a little cocoa notes come together leaving a smooth, mellow sweetness that just pushes you to take another sip. The floral flavor that lingers on the tongue is incredibly pleasant and adds to the enjoyment of this unique shōchū. The challenge with Naina is that it is just too drinkable, every bottle I have bought never lasts more than a week, it just hits on all levels.
水割り Diluted with water
4:1, 3:2 ratio: The magic ratio, all the key flavors remain present without becoming too mellow, perfect if drinking more than 1 glass.
2:3 ratio: It holds up surprisingly well as it mellows, a good way to stretch the bottle if on a budget.

Enjoy on the rocks
In the bottle: The nose reminds me of dried fruits, specifically dried apricots with a hint of vanilla, there is a faint sweetness and sharpness that is incredibly enticing. Aside from these notes, it is quite neutral and the alcohol is almost non-existent, which allows the subtle notes to shine.
On the rocks: ?Naina strikes a perfect balance between sweet and sharp, and never feels heavy in the mouth. What you experience on the nose comes through so smoothly on the palate, with the additional potato notes really shining on the finish which elevates ?Naina to a whole new level.
水割り Diluted with water
4:1, 3:2 ratio, Everything that makes this shōchū so amazing is still present, albeit a bit more subdued aside from the sweetness which really comes through with a little water.
2:3 ratio, at this ratio, it loses most the impact notes, however a subtle sweetens still lingers slightly but not the ideal way to enjoy ?Naina.

Name: ないな原酒2015 ?Naina Genshu 2015
Type: 芋・米ブレンド焼酎 Potato/Rice shōchū blend
Potato: 黄金千貫 Golden Sengan
Ingredients:
-
甘藷・米・Sweet Potato, Rice
-
Rice Koji 米麹 (国産米)
Alcohol: 38-39%

Enjoy on the rocks
In the bottle: Right from the start you are treated to a beautifully rich sweet potato nose that has some interesting woody notes, overall it really reminds me of birch trees, even a bit like birch beer (not sure if that was available outside of the North East). After swirling it around a little, there are some earthy notes that start to come forward along with a little bit of dried fruits. Amazingly the 38-39& alcohol is nowhere to be found and this 2015 (2nd bottle opened on January 12th 2025) comes across as fresh and inviting.
On the rocks: Thick, rich and absolutely wonderful. Similar to the nose, you hit with a big sweet potato that really reminds me of roasted sweet potatoes straight off the coals; ?Naina 2015 genshu is sweet in just the right way. Once you get past the sweeter, potato, vanilla and custard notes, the finish pulls in some interesting floral flavors; mostly lavender and honeysuckle as well as some less defined wild flower. The finish here is also quite exceptional, the higher alcohol really does a great job of bringing the softer, less defined sweet flavors through to the end, overall, just delicious.
Straight: Similar to on-the-rocks, this is thick and rich, not as thick as I was expecting but certainly on the thick side. ?Naina 2015 genshu is interestingly herby, almost reminds me of drinking schnapps back when I lived in Germany, this probably comes from the floral notes that are much stronger when enjoy straight, you can definitely feel this on the finish as the lavender opens up and is carried well by the high alcohol. Overall, neat in the glass is pretty good, and something I have been enjoying a lot more these days.

Akashi Shuzo knocks it out of the park again, amazing shōchū, top quality presentation and packaging, this is the type of gift you give (or buy for yourself) with confidence.
-
I have had more than a few special editions or premium selections, but honestly, none have compared to this 2015 release. This was so good, I had no issue shelling out another 3500 JPY for another bottle to keep on the shelf.
-
At 38~39% alcohol you need to be careful, it drinks so smooth on the rocks that it is easy to forget the higher alcohol content.
-
I am open to anything Akashi Shuzo puts out, everything I have had from them has been amazing. Hopefully I will pick up a few new bottles from their online store soon.

Potato: 黄金千貫 Golden Sengan
Ingredients:
-
黄金千貫 Golden Sengan
-
Black Rice Koji 黒麹 (宮崎産)
Alcohol: 36%

Enjoy on the rocks
In the bottle: The nose reminds me of dried fruits, specifically dried apricots with a hint of vanilla, there is a faint sweetness and sharpness that is incredibly enticing. Aside from these notes, it is quite neutral and the alcohol even at a stated 36% is almost non-existent, which is nice as this allows the more subtle notes to shine ven before you take the fist sip.
On the rocks: ?Naina strikes a perfect balance between sweet and sharp, and the 36% alcohol never feels heavy in the mouth. What you experience on the nose comes through so smoothly on the palate as you get a wash of dried fruits, vanilla, cocoa along with some additional sweet potato notes that really shine through on the finish which elevates ?Naina to a whole new level. As the ice melts, this opens up quite bit which reduces the punchyness of the sharper flavors and gives the dried fruits a chance to expand a bit, although with that mellowing the finish fades out quite quickly which is unfortunate.

Community Tasting Submission: I tried this on the rocks tonight. A little viscosity and few legs on the side of my glass after a swirl. As soon as the shochu hit the glass the crisp smell of the sweet potato bounced back at me. I found the nose much rounder and more complex than most sweet potato shochu you would meet. Hints of cream soda and toffee which mellowed and smoothed as the ice melted. Just as round as the full moon from its name, this shochu is full, smooth and deep. From the kogane masari sweet potatoes to the kurokoji distillation, this makes for a very velvetty drink. The sweet and complex aroma is really set off with a rich creamy mouthfeel and palette that likes to linger. I was really happy to try this one on the rocks this summer's night because as the ice melted, I feel like tsuki no hito shizuku really opened up and showcased the flavours of the potato. Overall one of my favorite shochu to date. I think this would appeal to those starting to drink sweet potato shochu and would be a great smooth mizuwari.

Another excellent bottle from Akashi Shuzo, not only is it a beautiful bottle what is in side is also quite amazing.

This was not a cheap bottle, but if you are really into interestings bottles of shochu and don't mind the higher price, Tsukihitoshizuku is well worth the pick up.

Enjoy on the rocks
In the bottle: Fresh and relatively neutral to start; however as you nose it a bit deeper you can catch some faint sweet potato flavors that start to develop once a bit of oxygen gets in the bottle. Similar to the other bottles of Naina?, there are some dried fruit notes, mostly apricots and figs that falls on the back end; however, it is hard to know what the result will be in the glass.
On the rocks: Another standout bottle from Akashi Shuzō, the first sip is smooth and bursting with an interesting range of flavors. At first ?Naina Kōkisanzen reminds me of sweet potato pie with a side of caramelized pecans (at least that is how it was served in my house) before switching gears to a light and airy custard with a finish that brings back those dried fruits observed on the nose. Overall, this is another version of ?Naina that is just so drinkable, I find it a real challenge to only have one glass.
Straight: Strangely reminiscent of root beer or cherry coke, or maybe something similar, there is a lot going on here on the first sip so it's a bit difficult to pin down. In many ways this reminds me of an herbal schnaps I remember from living in Germany, there is a strong herbal note that is mixed with some sharper floral flavors; certainly very interesting considering I did not find these strong flavors on the rocks.

I saw this bottle while on business in Kagoshima, I didn't pick it up since only the large bottle was available, fast forward a year later, I finally found this at my local shop, still in the large bottle but glad I could pick it up.
