Enjoy Straight or on-the-rocks
In the bottle: At first Toji Junpei starts a bit on the neutral side before opening up to let out a soft and subtle sweet potato that reminds me of when you take the lid of the pot to check if the sweet potatoes are ready. With a little oxygenation you can also find some earthy notes of wet hay and clay; this combination adds a nice bit of depth on the nose and gives you a bit of an inclination on what is in the bottle.
On the rocks: Wow, is pretty much all I can come up with on the first sip. Junpei starts with a nice and punchy sweet potato that spreads nicely across the palate with a perfect level of intensity before switching gears to into a beautiful sweetness full of candied vanilla and subtle custard notes. As the ice melts a fair amount of the more intense flavors fade a bit which allows the softer notes to develop a bit more giving a nice range of flavors to enjoy if sipping slowly.
Straight: Just beautiful, Toji Junpei is perfectly balanced when enjoyed neat in the glass, you get a burst of sweet potato that is bright and bold but nothing that overpowers the senses; which can sometimes happen when drinking something straight. As that initial impact fades you get a nice wash of vanilla and custard sweetness which ends nicely with a cocoa finish that has a nice bitterness and is backed by the sweeter notes. Overall this is definitely one of the better bottles I have opened this year.

Picked this up while in Tokyo for the week as something to drink in the evenings, this was so good I immediately bought another bottle.
-
Wow, again, this is really a spectacular shochu and one I have already started to recommend, from the nose to what is in the glass is near perfection.
-
This bottle of Toji Junpei was one of the best shochu I have had neat in the glass, it just hits on all levels and flavors.

Rice Koji (Miyazaki)米麹(宮崎県産米)

Enjoy Straight or on-the-rocks
In the bottle: Crystal clear and a bit on the neutral side; however, as this opens up a bit there is a nice wash sweet potato and a little toasted wheat or cereal notes that find there way to the surface. Additionally there is a fresh sweetness that starts to come forward at the end along with a slightly flowery scent; overall this is really inviting and gives the impression of a well crafted shochu.
On the rocks: In the glass it is slightly cloudy, not nigori but a faint cloud; the first sip is an intensely fresh sweet potato that is sharp in just the right way. As the ice melts you get a fair bit more sweetness that is accompanied by some of that toasted wheat on the nose, this type of fragrance always reminds me of Oh's cereal, especially on the finish. From a drinkability standpoint, you can easily enjoy several glasses, it is not heavy in the glass and the sweetness never outstayed its welcome. This shinshu by Toji Junpei is fresh, clean and has the right balance of flavors that can easily pull you in for a second glass.
Straight: Toji Junpei Shinshu is absolutely stunning neat in the glass, the sweet potato on the front-end is rich and slightly nutty; reminds me a bit of dry roasted almonds and even a little peanut. As expected this was incredibly smooth and the depth of the flavors keep bringing you back for another sip. The finish also excels as it ebbs and flows with a nice sweetness which lets the alcohol continue to carry those notty notes all the way to the end.

Picked this up in Kagoshima while visiting the Shochu Street shochu festival, I was quite intrigued by the slightly cloudy bottle and gave this a go.
-
Just like the standard Toji Junpei, this one completely knocks it out the park, fresh and sweet in the right way, another bottle I would highly recommend.
-
Neat in the glass is certainly a something to be enjoyed sip by sip, this was also the first time to find some interesting nutty notes.
