Enjoy Straight or on-the-rocks
In the bottle: Toji Junpei initially presents as fairly neutral on the nose right after pouring. With a little time and oxygenation, however, it opens beautifully to reveal a soft, subtle sweet potato character—evocative of lifting the lid on a pot of steaming sweet potatoes just as they finish cooking. Further swirling brings out earthy undertones of wet hay and damp clay, adding welcome depth and complexity. This combination provides a clear, intriguing preview of the quality and profile waiting in the glass.
On the rocks: The first sip is striking—almost a “wow” moment. It delivers a punchy, vibrant sweet potato flavor that spreads evenly across the palate with ideal intensity, never tipping into harshness. This quickly transitions into a gorgeous, rounded sweetness layered with candied vanilla and delicate custard notes. As the ice melts and the drink opens further, the more intense front-end flavors soften, allowing the subtler, creamier elements to come forward and create a wide, enjoyable spectrum of taste. Perfect for slow, contemplative sipping.
Straight: Toji Junpei is beautifully balanced when enjoyed neat—truly impressive for its strength and style. The entry brings a bright, bold burst of sweet potato that fills the palate with confidence yet remains controlled and never overwhelming. As that initial wave recedes, a luxurious wash of vanilla and custard-like sweetness takes over, leading into a refined cocoa finish: gently bitter, richly chocolatey, and elegantly supported by the lingering sweeter tones. Overall, this stands out as one of the strongest and most enjoyable bottles I’ve opened this year.
Reflections on this shōchū

I picked up this bottle during a week in Tokyo to enjoy in the evenings. It was so impressive that I immediately bought a second one before leaving.
-
Toji Junpei stands out as a truly exceptional shōchū. From the nose through to the palate, it delivers near-perfect balance and refinement—certainly a bottle I have begun recommending it to others.

This bottle ranks among the finest sweet potato shōchū I’ve tasted neat. It performs exceptionally well across every aspect: aroma, flavor, texture, and finish, hitting all the right notes with impressive harmony and depth.

Enjoy Straight or on-the-rocks
In the bottle: Crystal clear with a fairly neutral initial impression. As it opens, a pleasant wave of sweet potato emerges, joined by subtle toasted wheat or cereal notes. Toward the end, fresh sweetness comes forward, accompanied by a light floral hint. Overall, the nose is inviting and suggests a carefully crafted shōchū.
On the rocks: ISlight cloudiness appears in the glass—not nigori, but a faint haze. The first sip delivers an intensely fresh and sharply focused sweet potato character that strikes just the right note. As the ice melts, sweetness becomes more prominent, blending with the toasted wheat notes from the nose; the aroma particularly recalls Oh’s cereal, especially on the finish. From a drinkability perspective, it remains light and balanced in the glass—the sweetness never becomes cloying, making it easy to enjoy several pours. This shinshu expression from Toji Junpei is fresh, clean, and well-proportioned, readily inviting a second glass.
Straight: Toji Junpei Shinshu shines when served neat. The sweet potato comes through rich and slightly nutty on the front palate, evoking dry-roasted almonds with a touch of peanut. The texture is remarkably smooth, and the layered flavors encourage repeated sips. The finish is particularly strong, carrying a gentle, flowing sweetness that allows the alcohol to support the nutty notes all the way through to a clean, lingering close.
Reflections on this shōchū
-
I picked up this bottle during a visit to Kagoshima for the Shochu Street festival in 2024. The slightly cloudy appearance in the bottle caught my attention right away, so I decided to try it.
-
Like the standard Toji Junpei, this expression delivers outstanding quality. It strikes an excellent balance of freshness and sweetness—another bottle I would strongly recommend to anyone exploring premium sweet potato shōchū.
-
Served neat in the glass, it is best enjoyed slowly, sip by sip. This was also the first time I’ve noticed distinct nutty notes in this lineup, adding another layer of interest and complexity to an already impressive shōchū.
