In the bottle: The moment the bottle is opened, a beautiful, expressive sweet potato aroma pours out, complemented by soft vanilla and toasted rice that bring everything together seamlessly. At 37% ABV, the nose is remarkably smooth—deep inhales reveal almost no alcohol heat. With a bit of air exposure, earthy tones and wet hay emerge, creating an intriguing contrast to the initial impression. Overall, the aroma feels layered and inviting, hinting at depth beyond the straightforward sweetness.
On the rocks: The ice requires some time to melt before the full profile unfolds, but once it does, Nakamura Jyō delivers a pure, bright sweet potato experience—thick, rich, and unmistakably potato-forward in a way that feels both generous and balanced. As a genshu (undiluted), it has a noticeably heavier, more viscous mouthfeel compared to stepped-down shōchū, which naturally encourages smaller, more deliberate sips and allows the flavors to unfold slowly on the palate. The finish is particularly rewarding: softer vanilla and subtle cocoa notes gain room to breathe, enhancing the overall drinkability and making this an easy bottle to linger over.
Straight: Intensely powerful as this hits the tongue—the sweet potato arrives with full force and can momentarily dominate the senses. Once the initial sharpness subsides and the palate adjusts, the experience turns almost magical. The pure sweet potato character softens, giving way to delicate floral notes of lavender and honeysuckle that carry gracefully through the finish. The 37% ABV plays an important role here, providing lift and structure that allow subtler cocoa and vanilla elements—often masked in the front—to emerge clearly and linger beautifully on the close.

I first encountered Nakamura shōchū at Kagoshima’s excellent 鹿児島焼酎Bar 鹿 ROKU, where it made a strong impression. Before heading back to Hiroshima, I stopped by a bottle shop, and the staff recommended this genshu expression—it turned out to be absolutely outstanding.

Nakamura Jyō Genshu is an intense, powerful shōchū that shines whether served on the rocks or neat in the glass. The flavors are bold and rewarding, but at 37% ABV, the alcohol strength can catch up quickly—best enjoyed mindfully and in moderation to fully appreciate everything it has to offer. Highly recommended for anyone who appreciates a richer, more concentrated sweet potato shōchū.

In the bottle: Nakamura opens with a gentle, slightly fragrant nose featuring prominent sweet potato, dried fruit (particularly apricot), and soft earthy undertones. A deeper inhale reveals a pleasant, fresh sharpness that subtly balances the sweeter vapors without overpowering them. Nothing dominates aggressively; instead, the elements are well-integrated, balanced, and highly inviting.
On the rocks: The initial sip arrives fresh, light, and smooth before the sweeter side gradually takes over—never sticky, but clearly the leading character. Nakamura performs exceptionally well on the rocks: as the ice melts, the sweetness steps back slightly, allowing the core sweet potato character to expand and deliver excellent balance and increased drinkability. This makes it an ideal izakaya or yakitori companion—the freshness and controlled sweetness pair beautifully with salty foods and snacks, especially across multiple glasses.
Straight: A touch of warmth appears on the first sip, but overall the shōchū remains remarkably smooth and approachable when served neat. The opening brings fresh, dry, and slightly tart sweet potato notes—an interesting contrast to the sweeter finish that follows. After a few sips, subtler layers emerge: vanilla, caramel, and dried fruit rise gently to the surface. Well worth exploring neat if you have the bottle in hand.
Paired with Chocolate: Kaldi 70% chocolate, Another strong and enjoyable pairing. The chocolate gains a rich, velvety texture and noticeably deeper intensity. Classic dark chocolate–cherry liqueur notes come through prominently, especially on the finish, making this combination highly recommended for anyone who enjoys exploring shōchū with chocolate.

Encouraged by the positive experience with my first bottle of Nakamura, I picked up this one as soon as it appeared at my local bottle shop.

At around 1,900 JPY, it falls comfortably in the mid-range for shōchū. In my view, it offers good value for the quality and would make an excellent choice for a hot summer barbecue night—the freshness, balance, and easy drinkability pair particularly well with grilled foods and outdoor gatherings. A solid, reliable bottle worth adding to the rotation.
