Additional Content: There is nothing specific from the distillery but Tateyama-san from Monogatari Saketen in Tokyo gives a great introduction and background on this shōchū and Fuchita Shuzō, worth a listen if you understand Japanese.

Name: 一勝地 Ishōchi Aged in Oak

Type: 米焼酎 Rice shōchū
常圧蒸留: 減圧蒸留 (Vacuum Distillation)

Ingredients:

  • 米 Rice

  • 米麹(国産) Rice Koji (Domestic)

Alcohol: 25%

In the bottle: Clean and fresh with candied oranges, vanilla, and rice on the front end, plus some additional citrus notes that come through once it breathes a little. Overall, Ishōchi has a very subtle and light nose, giving away very little on what you will find in the bottle. It’s understated, refined, and quietly inviting.

On the rocks: So soft and smooth. A lot of what you find on the nose really carries over on the palate. The candied oranges, vanilla, and toasted rice are not intense—they’re refined with no sharp edges. Ishōchi is just so drinkable it is hard not to go back for a second glass. From what I could find, Ishōchi is stored first in stone jars (kame) and then oak barrels, which gives it a beautiful amber color and adds a lot of the softer notes that make this such a well-balanced bottle to enjoy sip by sip.

Straight: Dangerous. On the rocks is really nice, but neat in a glass is absolutely amazing—all those subtle notes are a bit more intense and vivid, giving the full experience of what this bottle has to offer. The flavors feel clearer and more focused, with the citrus, vanilla, and rice coming through beautifully. A very rewarding way to enjoy it. 

水割り Diluted with water

4:1 ratio: Not needed. Better to enjoy this straight or on the rocks—the dilution softens the already gentle profile too much and takes away from the refined character that shines without water.

Reflections on this shōchū

  • A very accessible entry into the world of Kuma shōchū (球磨焼酎).

  • Found this bottle at my favorite shop in Tokyo, Monogatari. Bought it after a quick tasting—there was no question that I really wanted to enjoy this a bit more. The shop staff knows their stuff, and this one stood out right away.

  • I usually enjoy shōchū on the rocks or neat in the glass, and while amazingly good on ice, Ishōchi is just pure magic neat in the glass. The subtle candied orange, vanilla, toasted rice, and light citrus notes become more vivid and focused straight—no dilution to soften anything, just clean, refined elegance that feels effortless and rewarding. It’s smooth, fresh, and layered without ever being heavy—perfect for slow, thoughtful sipping.
