蒸留方法: 常圧蒸留 (Atmopsheric)

Ingredients:

  • 米麹(タイ産米) Rice Koji (Thailand)

Alcohol: 43%

In the bottle: There is an initial mellowness when you first crack the bottle open that while soft at first, slowly opens up into a range of beautiful Awamori vibes. This is definitely one of the most fragrant bottles I have opened in a long time; Ryūkyūōchō Tokusen Koshu has an almost floral note to it, which might be a first for me to find. Additionally, you get a little more oxygen in, I have to say this becomes a bit like bath soap, it is not unpleasant but yeah, bath soap.

On the rocks: The first sip is an interesting mix of bright freshness overlayed on top of an earthy funk that has a long lasting finish of full of vanilla, custard and a bit of cacao in for good measure. Letting the ice melt a bit more, Ryūkyūōchō Tokusen Koshu mellows out very quickly and while the intensity fades into the background, what is lefts is

Reflections on this Awamori

  • Opened this as the Christmas special bottle, it was a Merry Christmas indeed.

  • Still can’t believe I knocked this bottle over and lost about 15% of its precious contents. Note to self: never leave a bottle open on the table...

  • This was a special bottle purchase, and while just under 20,000 JPY is a steal for something 30 years old, it is still significantly more than I would typically spend. That being said, with the current economy in Japan, one can never tell when a bottle like this may disappear, so sometimes a splurge is a great way to taste some amazing Awamori history.
